IT WAS MUSIC THAT HE BLED

IT WAS MUSIC THAT HE BLED

ORPHEUS
avatar of music
sorcerer of sound
into the world of darkness ventured
to
bring back the loved one he had lost.

With his haunting music
he
lured
the
ACHERON
boatman
to slumber and to sleep
then crossed the spectral waters
to reach the kingdom of the dead.

At
the inner chambers before the dreaded gods
stirred by love and passion
armed only with his song
he strung his lyre
and
as
he
sang
the temples of his sound
the colours of his chant
split
the mournful darkness into the rainbow’s spectrum hues
and
stilled and silenced
all
of
HADES
was enraptured by the beauty his song.

Consenting on condition
that before darkness turned to light
he did not view her face
the gods then loaned her back.

As
in song and hope he led her
through maze-like tortuous paths
with
voice in amber veiled and music saffron toned
he craved for the beacon of the sky
but
love and doubt
took over
and
back he turned to look
then
silence stilled his music
and
sorrow quelled his voice.

As
she
returned
to
HADES
and
death displaced desire
to no avail he searched his voice to chant an ardent prayer
and
his
incantations
which before had raised the dead
were
now
all
hushed and stilled
and
as she again expired
both
music and musician
waned and passed away.

Doleful and dejected
in death no blood he shed
it was
MUSIC
that he bled
for only that had filled his veins
and
now across the tide of time
the echo of his music haunts us to this day
as if to banish distance
and
eternalise his song.
